Settlers of Cattan: Worth It

Settlers of Cattan is worth it, and then some!

You start out with a playing board with different regions, containing 5 different resources (wood, brick, sheep, wheat, and ore), shuffled anew between games.

You then begin building, using resources gathered along the way, determined by everyone’s dice rolls.

As you gain these resources, you can combine them, in set patterns, to purchase things like new homes, roads that connect them, cities, and handy-dandy cards that get you free things.

My husband and I love to sit down to a juicy game of "Settlers" against our youngest son, who's started to sometimes legitimately win.

It’s kind of like monopoly, come to think of it. Except that here, you’re a builder.

In fact, I’d say this could be a great follow-up game for your kids.

Start them with one, then graduate them to the other.

In Settlers of Cattan, you have to make more decisions and have more options for moves.

If you’re already familiar with this popular game, you’re likely to get a kick out of this quote, which I picked up in some random virtual alleyway somewhere:

“We built this city on rock and wheat.”

I used to struggle with what to make with leftover rotisserie chicken. But now I just whip up delicious burritos. These ones were made with a caesar salad.

When Thai food’s good, Thai food’s good. A “hole in the wall” we frequent in the theater district of NYC that’s worth a visit.
